2026 Lantern Festival: Casamale lights up again, reflecting history, ritual, and identity.

SOMMA VESUVIANA – Every four years, Casamale is transformed into a village suspended in time, illuminated by thousands of tiny flames that tell a story of history, memory, and belonging. From August 3 to 5, 2026, the Festa delle Lucerne returns, one of Campania's most distinctive folk festivals, attracting visitors from across the region and beyond.

In the medieval heart of Somma Vesuviana, it won't just be the oil lamps that shine: the ritual will be brought to life, above all, by the collective work of a community that has preserved this tradition for generations. Weeks of preparation transform the village into a shared workshop, where artists, volunteers, associations, families, children, and the elderly collaborate to create installations, decorations, and scenography that will accompany the evenings of the festival.

The event represents much more than an event to be observed. It is a lived cultural heritage, a link between past and present that continues to be renewed through simple and symbolic gestures. Among alleys, ancient walls, and illuminated paths, the thousands of flames tell the story of a community defending its identity and choosing to pass it on to new generations.

The 2026 edition will feature a packed calendar of events, including guided tours, book presentations, creative workshops, exhibitions, excursions, cultural events, cooking demonstrations, and children's initiatives. Special attention will be paid to accessibility: on August 2nd, some of the village's alleys will be illuminated for the first time, allowing people with disabilities, the elderly, and children to experience the festival atmosphere in a more peaceful and organized setting.

The most anticipated moment will arrive on August 5th with the traditional procession of Maria Santissima della Neve, a spiritual and identity-building event that represents one of the most significant moments of the event.

The Festival of the Lamps thus continues to be an example of how a tradition can survive the test of time thanks to popular participation. In an age marked by speed, the Casamale ritual recalls the value of waiting, collaboration, and shared memory.

To ensure safety and orderly access management, entry to the village will be regulated by free numbered bracelets, distributed starting at 19:30 PM at the reception points on Via San Pietro, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele III, and Via De Matha. Access to the event will be permitted exclusively through Porta Terra, while Porta Formosi, Porta Castello, and Porta Piccioli will be used as exits.

Visitors must wear the wristband at all times while in the event area. Consumption of food and beverages will be permitted only at authorized establishments.

To facilitate the arrival of the public, free parking will be available in the Market Area, in Santa Maria del Pozzo and in the Cemetery Area, with a shuttle service available from August 3rd to 5th from 19 pm to 1 am, with the last bus scheduled at 00:30 am, except in extraordinary circumstances.

Casamale is preparing to reopen its doors and transform itself once again into a journey of light, culture, and participation. A celebration that isn't just about being told, but that every four years invites everyone to experience it.
