Francesca Tucci
Naples – A race against time ended in the worst possible way. The family of Francesca Tucci, the 24-year-old woman who died on July 3rd in the intensive care unit of Naples' Cardarelli Hospital, is breaking their silence and demanding full clarification of the causes of their loss.
After the parents filed a complaint, the Naples Public Prosecutor's Office immediately launched an investigation, placing three doctors under investigation on suspicion of manslaughter.
According to initial analyses of the documents and statements from the family's lawyers—Massimo Lanna, Massimo D'Errico, and Francesco Petruzzi—the twenty-four-year-old's symptoms had appeared only a few weeks before her hospitalization.
In that very short period of time, the first doctors the girl consulted had advised caution, recommending not to rush things and to proceed with more in-depth diagnostic tests and a multidisciplinary evaluation.
The turning point, unfortunately fatal, would only come later. "The indication for surgery," the three lawyers explain in an official statement, "came only from the last professional consulted, and from there, very quickly, we moved to the operating room." The decision to operate as a private in-patient (intramoenia) practice occurred shortly before the tragic outcome in intensive care.
The medical-legal investigations ordered by the judiciary will now clarify three key issues. First, the experts will have to determine whether the decision to undergo surgery was supported by the actual clinical picture and the scientific community's guidelines. The prosecutor's office will also examine the completeness of the patient's signed informed consent and the management of post-operative complications, to determine whether the Cardarelli staff acted promptly enough. "On these points," the lawyers conclude, "the family demands answers."
