Sapri: Man barricaded in building threatens to set fire to: Arrested

Sapri– Tension and fear erupted yesterday afternoon in Sapri, in the Salerno province, where a 49-year-old man was reported by the Carabinieri after damaging several meters with a pickaxe and barricading himself in his home, threatening to set the entire building on fire.

According to the reconstruction provided by the Carabinieri, the man—apparently mentally and physically impaired—went to the Mocchie area, where he attacked several utilities with a pickaxe, causing significant damage. After the attack, he fled toward his home in Timpone.

Once back inside the home, the 49-year-old began threatening those present, declaring that he wanted to set the building on fire and that he intended to commit extreme acts against himself. The alarm was promptly raised by the Carabinieri of the Sapri station and the Mobile Radio Unit, along with the firefighters and 118 emergency medical personnel.

After several unsuccessful attempts at dialogue and mediation, the firefighters intervened by forcing the front door. This allowed them to arrest the man, who was immediately taken to the station.

He was charged with domestic violence, criminal damage, and insulting a public official. Following the standard procedures, the 49-year-old was transferred to the Psychiatry Department of the San Luca Hospital in Vallo della Lucania, where he accepted admission.
The matter is now being examined by the Public Prosecutor's Office, which will have to evaluate the suspect's position and the full circumstances of the incident.
