The heat returns tomorrow
Rome – After a lull in the past few days, Italy is bracing for another African heatwave. Today, Monday, July 27, 2026, temperatures remain far from last week's scorching peaks: according to the Ministry of Health's heatwave bulletin, which monitors 27 provincial capitals, green zones prevail.
Ten cities are yellow (Bari, Catania, Civitavecchia, Latina, Messina, Perugia, Pescara, Reggio Calabria, Rieti, Rome), two are orange – Palermo and Campobasso – and none are red.
Tomorrow, the situation changes radically. The number of cities with a yellow warning (moderate heat wave) doubles to 20: Ancona, Bari, Bologna, Bolzano, Brescia, Catania, Civitavecchia, Florence, Frosinone, Genoa, Latina, Milan, Naples, Palermo, Pescara, Reggio Calabria, Rome, Turin, Trieste, and Viterbo.
Messina and Rieti are now orange, indicating a health risk for the most vulnerable groups—the elderly, children, and the frail. Campobasso becomes the only city with a red flag, a level indicating a potential danger even for healthy people. Only Cagliari, Venice, and Verona will remain green.
The heat is tightening. Only Cagliari remains under the green alert on Wednesday. The yellow alert number drops to 14, but the orange alert number increases to 11: Bolzano, Brescia, Civitavecchia, Florence, Frosinone, Latina, Perugia, Rieti, Rome, Turin, and Viterbo. Campobasso remains the only city under the red alert. A day of intense heat is expected across the peninsula, with a significant impact on public health.
