Coffee capsules and pods: starting August 12th, new rules for separate waste collection in Italy will apply.

Rome – A significant turning point is approaching for the coffee world in Italy. Starting August 12, 2026, thanks to the new EU Packaging Regulation (PPWR, Regulation 2025/40), coffee capsules and pods will officially be considered packaging, with significant implications for waste sorting and recycling.

Although the capsules contain coffee residue when disposed of, the new regulation requires clear labeling to guide consumers in their disposal: aluminum or plastic capsules must be disposed of following the manufacturer's and municipal instructions, while compostable pods or capsules should be disposed of in the organic waste bin where applicable. Separable components will be collected separately.

Michele Monzini, Vice President of the Italian Coffee Committee of Unione Italiana Food, explains that it will no longer be necessary to empty the capsules before disposing of them, marking a breakthrough in packaging management. The system is based on a shared responsibility between producers, CONAI, and citizens: companies are working to make products increasingly recyclable, the consortium supports collection and recycling, and consumers must follow the instructions on the labels.

The new labeling will be standardized across Europe, with simple and immediate messages, overcoming current differences between municipalities. This will facilitate proper daily disposal, enhancing environmental sustainability.

The Italian Coffee Committee, through a dedicated commission, is already working on eco-design, harvesting experiments, and dialogue with sorting plants to ensure an effective and innovative transition. Italian companies are positioning themselves as leaders of change, transforming regulatory challenges into industrial opportunities, confirming their commitment to sustainability and protecting the traditional coffee ritual in Italian homes.

This new regulation represents a fundamental step forward for the circular economy and environmental protection, involving all stakeholders in the supply chain in a shared and responsible process.
