Benevento, head-on collision at Ponte Valentino: two dead and one seriously injured

Benevento – Two lives lost and a young man in critical condition. This is the tragic outcome of yet another fatal accident that bloodied the roads of Sannio on the night between Tuesday, August 5th and Wednesday, August 6th, 2026. The head-on collision, which occurred in the Ponte Valentino district along state road 90 bis just outside Benevento, involved two cars: a Ford Focus and a Hyundai.

The impact was so violent that the engines of both cars were thrown out of their respective engine compartments and hurled onto the asphalt.

The 118 emergency services, the police and the firefighters immediately rushed to the scene, but there was nothing that could be done for two of the three occupants of the Focus.

The victims and the injured

Antonio DR, 65, and Giovanni F., 61, both residents of Benevento and passengers in the Ford Focus, lost their lives. Paramedics could only pronounce them dead.

The driver of the Hyundai, a 21-year-old Romanian, was seriously injured. He was extricated from the vehicle with great difficulty and taken to the hospital with a red code. His condition remains critical.

The dynamics of the crash

According to an initial reconstruction, which is still being verified, the Hyundai struck the guard rail and then continued on, crossing into the opposite lane. At that moment, the Ford Focus carrying the two victims arrived, making a head-on collision inevitable.

Technical investigations by the Highway Police and the Carabinieri will clarify the precise sequence of the accident, the speeds of the two vehicles, and the causes that led to the collision.

July 29, 2026, Paupisi (Benevento) – A sixteen-year-old boy died after crashing his motorcycle into a wall and a railing between Via Aldo Moro and Via Vignale. Emergency medical services attempted to revive him for a long time, but were unable to do so.

July 24, 2026, Rione Libertà, Benevento – Two young people were injured in an accident in which a Dacia Logan overturned and struck an electric post on Via Napoli. No casualties were reported, but the toll could have been much higher.

July 20, 2026, Benevento – Another two-car accident was reported in the area, but no fatalities were reported.

August 3, 2026, Limina Tunnel (Reggio Calabria, Ionian-Tyrrhenian Sea) – Although not affecting the Sannio area, this accident involving three serious injuries in a head-on collision inside a tunnel is a reminder of the dramatic frequency of similar accidents, even in the summer.

The overall 2026 death toll for the province of Benevento remains under review, but ISTAT data cited in recent analyses show that in Campania, between June, July, and August, 3.170 road accidents resulting in personal injuries occurred, equal to 29% of the annual total, with a peak in July.
