Ischia – An evening of terror turned into yet another episode of domestic violence. A 48-year-old man, already known to law enforcement, was arrested by State Police officers on charges of domestic violence and charged with aggravated assault.

The escape to the police station and the request for help

The alarm was raised last night when a woman showed up at the Ischia Police Station in a clearly agitated and shocked state. She told officers that she had been attacked by her husband following yet another argument over trivial matters.

This escalation, unfortunately, is not isolated, as confirmed by the victim herself, who reported previous episodes of abuse that had not subsided. During yesterday's violent argument, however, the situation escalated: the couple's son intervened to defend his mother and was stabbed by his father.

The police intervention and the arrest of the 48-year-old

The officers immediately headed to the reported home. Upon arriving, they were approached by the injured young man, who, pointing to his parent, confirmed the attack he had suffered shortly before. Seeing himself discovered, the 48-year-old attempted a desperate escape on foot, but was quickly caught and apprehended by the officers.

A subsequent search of the apartment yielded two switchblades, one of which was still dirty and had been used to stab the boy. The man was immediately arrested.

The summer increase in gender-based and domestic violence

The Ischia incident is not an isolated case, but is part of a statistical and criminological trend well known to experts: the increase in cases of violence against women and domestic abuse during the summer season.

The causes of this seasonal peak are multiple and interconnected:

Promiscuous housing and prolonged shared time: During the summer months, work and school routines are interrupted or slowed down. Forced cohabitation for extended periods in the same spaces increases the potential for friction and reduces the external "relief valves" (work, daily commitments) that often temporarily keep tensions within the family unit at bay.

Victim isolation and loss of support networks: Summer often coincides with the suspension of many social support activities, the temporary closure of government offices, or the diminishing contact with colleagues, friends, and relatives due to vacation. The abuser exploits this isolation to exert even more suffocating control.

Environmental factors and substance use: High temperatures, altered sleep-wake rhythms, and a potential increase in alcohol or substance use during the holidays act as behavioral disinhibitors, lowering the frustration tolerance threshold in individuals already predisposed to violent behavior.

Victim's resistance to breaking the "status quo": Holidays or vacation periods often create in victims the hope (or social pressure) that "at least things will be better in the summer." The contrast between this expectation and reality triggers even more violent outbursts from the abuser when they perceive they are not in complete control.

The episode also demonstrates the fundamental role of children as direct or witnessed victims of domestic violence, often forced to act as a "human shield" to protect their mother, paying a very high physical and psychological price.
