Battipaglia, a car-motorcycle collision on the A2 motorway ramp kills businessman Gerardo Marcantuono.

Battipaglia – 31-year-old entrepreneur Gerardo Marcantuono, originally from Oliveto Citra and resident in Eboli, lost his life yesterday afternoon in a traffic accident on the A2 motorway access ramp in Battipaglia, Salerno. For reasons currently under investigation, the accident involved a head-on collision between a car—a Dacia—and the motorcycle carrying the victim.

There was nothing that could be done for the driver of the two-wheeler: the 118 paramedics, who arrived on the scene with a VoPI and a Croce Verde ambulance, could only pronounce him dead. The driver of the car, a local woman, was unharmed but in shock.

Traffic Police officers from the Eboli sub-section also responded to the accident scene, conducting all necessary investigations, along with Anas personnel and firefighters. The road was closed while the investigation was being carried out, causing traffic jams and delays on local roads. The Salerno Public Prosecutor's Office ordered an autopsy on the body, which was transferred to the Eboli hospital morgue.

Investigations into the dynamics of the accident

Investigators are trying to shed light on the dynamics of the accident: it is not yet clear whether the motorcyclist hit the car following a sudden maneuver by one of the two drivers or if he lost control of the vehicle for other reasons.

The driver of the car has undergone all necessary tests to determine whether he was fit to drive at the time of the crash. Surveillance camera footage is also being examined to determine any liability. Meanwhile, the car and motorcycle have been seized, and his license has been suspended pending the magistrate's decision.

Marcantuono was a young entrepreneur working in the construction and window and door industry, well-known and respected in Eboli. Two weeks before the fatal crash, he had miraculously escaped unharmed from a serious accident in his black Porsche, which was completely destroyed. At the time, he had shared a message on social media expressing gratitude for the second chance he had been given. News of his death spread quickly throughout the city, sparking deep mourning. His funeral will be held in the coming days in Eboli.
