Car insurance and fuel prices: A large turnout at the Naples demonstration

A packed square and a protest that aims to transcend Campania's borders. This is the message coming from Piazza del Carmine in Naples this morning, where a demonstration focused on high car insurance and fuel costs took place.

The initiative was promoted by Alleanza Verdi Sinistra MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli and singer-songwriter Cosimo Merolla, with the participation of the "Let's Make Sure We're All Equal" committee.

At the heart of the protests are regional differences in insurance rates and the ever-increasing burden of car-related costs on family budgets.

Among the protesters were many young people. "I'm 21 and I pay €1.800 for insurance," said one participant. Signs displayed in the square read slogans like "Same laws, same car insurance rates," "Naples says enough, equality for all," and requests for action to make insurance costs more affordable.

The request: standardize rates for virtuous drivers

The mobilization focuses in particular on the proposal of a Single National Tariff for drivers considered virtuous.

"This is not a demonstration by a party or a single parliamentarian, but by citizens demanding not to be discriminated against based on where they live," Borrelli declared.

The MP argued that in the Naples area, insurance companies' profits would reach approximately €155 per single policy, linking the issue to insurance fraud.

"Fraudsters must be prosecuted without mercy, but the cost of fraud cannot be passed on to the vast majority of honest citizens," added Borrelli, announcing his intention to resubmit the proposal for a Single National Tariff to Parliament.

The high cost of fuel is also in the crosshairs

The protests didn't just focus on insurance. Demonstrators also highlighted the high cost of fuel, which they see as a further pressure on families and workers who use cars daily.

"Seeing such a large turnout demonstrates how deeply felt the issue is. This is just the first step," said Cosimo Merolla.

The organizers' stated goal is to bring the mobilization to Rome, transforming the protest that began in Naples into a nationwide initiative.

Political participation

Representatives of Europa Verde and Alleanza Verdi Sinistra participated in the demonstration, including regional councilor Carlo Ceparano, Rosario Pugliese, Nelide Milano, Rino Nasti, Benedetta Sciannimanica, Gianni Caselli, Agostino Galiero, Salvatore Iavarone, Gianluigi Grittano, and Carlo Restaino.

Also present were AVS regional councilor Rosario Andreozzi, Naples City Council Vice President Flavia Sorrentino, Alfonso Gemito, one of the event's coordinators, and activists Giovanni Piombino, Roberto Russo, Carmen Gigliotti, and Germana Falibretti of the ArtigiaNa association.

From the Neapolitan square, the organizers have relaunched a mobilization that brings together two issues closely linked to the daily lives of motorists: the cost of car insurance and the cost of fuel.
