FIUGGI – A fake Carabiniere, a phone call designed to create alarm, and an instant bank transfer of €30. This is the dynamics of the cyber fraud against a religious institution in Fiuggi, reconstructed by the Carabinieri of the local station, who were able to identify the recipient's account and recover the entire sum.
The investigation began following a complaint filed by a member of the institute, who in the previous days had received a phone call from a man identifying himself as a Carabinieri officer from the Frosinone Provincial Command. The alleged officer had told the woman that large sums of money were being transferred abroad from the institute's bank account.
The goal, according to the investigation, was to create a state of intense concern to gain the victim's trust. The scammer then proposed the possibility of securing the assets, requesting bank account details and the credentials needed to carry out online transactions.
Convinced she was following the instructions of a law enforcement officer, the woman allegedly provided the requested information. Shortly thereafter, an instant transfer of €30 was arranged to another bank account, designated as secure and intended to protect the bank's funds.
After completing the operation, however, the man apparently disappeared. It was then that the victim contacted the Carabinieri, triggering an investigation.
The police were able to reconstruct the route taken by the money, identifying the IBAN and the bank receiving the transfer. Further investigations also allowed them to trace the account holder, a young man living in the province of Caserta.
The promptness of the investigation allowed for the precautionary seizure of the sum and the recovery of all 30 euros stolen from the religious institution.
