Antonino 'Nino' Cuomo
Sorrento mourns Antonino "Nino" Cuomo, who passed away at the age of 96. A lawyer, journalist, writer, and former mayor, he also represents a firsthand account of nearly a century of the city's history.
The eldest of eight children, he came from a family with ties to the marquetry trade. After joining the Christian Democrats in the 1950s, he served as councilor from 1960 and then as mayor from 1978 to 1983. His commitment to healthcare was central: he contributed to the transformation of the local hospital into a civil hospital.
A man of culture and institutions, he left behind a vast body of work dedicated to the historical memory of Sorrento. His life marked him with two profound losses: his daughter Libia, who died in 1976, and his wife Rosa, who passed away in 2017. His son Giuseppe served as mayor from 2010 to 2020.
The funeral will be held tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. in the Church of the Santissima Annunziata. He is survived by his children Federico, Giuseppe, and Amelia.
