Home hemodialysis, an innovative breakthrough in Campania: the Caserta Local Health Authority leads the way.

The Caserta Local Health Authority is introducing home hemodialysis for the first time in Campania, a practice still rare in Italy that promises to improve the quality of life and independence of dialysis patients.

Caserta – A major step forward in the care of dialysis patients comes from the Caserta Local Health Authority (ASL), which has inaugurated the first home hemodialysis service in the Campania region. This milestone places the healthcare provider among the most advanced in the country, considering that in Italy, only 60 patients undergo hemodialysis at home out of a total of 50.000 dialysis patients, with the majority relying on peritoneal dialysis.

Hemodialysis, unlike peritoneal dialysis, which uses a natural abdominal filter, requires the use of an external artificial kidney to purify the blood, a procedure historically confined to hospital facilities. Thanks to the commitment of the Nephrology and Dialysis Unit, led by Dr. Gelsomina Giordano, operating at the Maddaloni and San Felice a Cancello facilities, an innovative program has been launched that allows patients to receive this complex treatment directly at home.

The main advantage of this modality is the significant improvement in quality of life: the possibility of undergoing treatment in a familiar environment offers greater flexibility, facilitates the management of daily commitments, and reduces the stress associated with hospital travel. From a clinical standpoint, patients also benefit from a quicker post-session recovery, thanks to a reduced psychophysical impact.

Dr. Elisabetta Manzi, Medical Director of the participating facilities, emphasizes how the collaboration with the supplier Eubios allows for constant and remote monitoring of procedures, ensuring hospital-quality care. The General Director of the Caserta Local Health Authority, Dr. Antonio Limone, emphasizes how this initiative represents a virtuous example of public healthcare, combining advanced technology and humanized care, restoring dignity, freedom, and precious time to patients.
