National Square in Naples
Naples – A family vacation turned into a nightmare, followed by the parents' complaint and a swift police investigation. A 50-year-old man was jailed in Naples on charges of aggravated sexual assault and drug trafficking against a young Italian tourist.
The precautionary custody order, issued by the Naples Court at the request of the Prosecutor's Office, was executed in recent days following a detailed investigative effort.
The events date back to the night between June 15th and 16th. According to investigators' reconstruction, the victim—who had come to the city for a few days' vacation with her family—met the 50-year-old man that evening.
The man allegedly sold her a harmful mix of narcotics, specifically ketamine and crack. Alleging the girl's altered state and impaired defense, completely stunned by the effects of the drugs, the attacker led her to a dark alley near Piazza Nazionale, where he committed the sexual assault.
The investigation was triggered by the timely complaint filed by the young woman's parents. The investigation was entrusted to Section IV of the Naples Flying Squad, which specializes in crimes against vulnerable groups. The investigation was led by the District Attorney's Office and supported by officers from the Montecalvario Police Station.
Through extensive local investigations and intensive searches, the man was identified and finally located, with the assistance of the Campania Railway Police Department, before he could disappear. The 50-year-old was sent to prison.
Law enforcement recommendations for women traveling and in crowded places
When faced with news stories involving stun guns or vulnerable situations in tourism, it's important to remember some basic prevention rules:
Be careful with substances and drinks (Drink Spiking Prevention):
Never accept drinks or substances from people you just meet.
In public spaces or bars, never leave your glass unattended.
Safe travel and isolated places:
Avoid leaving your group or family members to follow unknown people into dimly lit areas or isolated alleys.
Prefer main, well-lit and busy routes, especially at night.
Location Sharing:
Keep geolocation active on your smartphone and share your location in real time with trusted family or friends.
Emergency numbers at your fingertips:
Always keep emergency numbers memorized and ready for use (in Italy, 112 for the Single European Emergency Number and the free YouPol app of the State Police, also useful for immediate reporting).
Based on the evidence that has emerged, investigators are trying to delve deeper into the man's personality, such as his habit of committing similar acts. The dynamics of the attack (rapid delivery of debilitating substances such as crack and ketamine and immediate dispatch to a previously identified isolated location) could indicate a consolidated modus operandi.
Investigators are investigating whether the man is responsible for similar incidents in the same area. The 50-year-old was identified by cross-referencing images from public and private security cameras between the victim's contact area and the area near Piazza Nazionale.
The Prosecutor's Office could contest the aggravating circumstance of the use of narcotic substances/administration of stun substances to turn the victim's condition of incapacity to act or resist to their advantage.
