Naples – Counterfeiting at the Maddalena market has been a huge source of profits for organized crime for years, fueling the exploitation of foreign workers forced to work under the control of the clans.

A blow to one of the most profitable criminal businesses

Today's joint operation isn't just a seizure of counterfeit goods. It's an operation that targets one of the most lucrative illegal economic sectors in eastern Naples, where illegal trade has been a major source of income for organized crime for years.

The area of ​​the Maddalena market and the streets surrounding the Central Station have long been considered one of the most important hubs for the sale of counterfeit products. Here, the counterfeit market not only leads to tax evasion and unfair competition against honest merchants, but also fuels a criminal system that generates huge profits for the clans' coffers.

Behind these makeshift stalls lies a well-organized supply chain: from the production and distribution of counterfeit goods to retail sale, with prices and marketing methods that, according to numerous investigations in recent years, are dictated by the criminal gangs that control the territory.

The exploitation of foreign workers

Those who often pay the highest price are street vendors, mostly migrants, forced to work in extremely precarious conditions.

Many of them, as revealed in several judicial investigations, are forced to purchase the goods directly from criminally controlled channels, without any ability to choose suppliers or prices. Once the sale is made, the profit margin remains minimal, while the bulk of the profits end up in the hands of the criminal organizations that manage the trafficking of counterfeit products.

A system that simultaneously fuels labor exploitation, tax evasion, and territorial control.

The high-impact operation

It is precisely in this context that the extraordinary operation coordinated by the Prefecture of Naples fits in, as part of the activities decided by the Provincial Committee for Public Order and Safety.

In recent days, law enforcement has concentrated its checks on the Maddalena local market and the areas surrounding one of the hotels located a short walk from the Central Station, considered one of the city's most sensitive areas due to illegal trading.

The operation resulted in the seizure of over 3.000 counterfeit items, including clothing, footwear, and accessories.

Eight people were charged with counterfeiting, receiving stolen goods, and immigration violations, while one man was also arrested for resisting a public official.

Checks on people and vehicles

During the operation, 167 people were identified and 70 vehicles were checked.

Seven fines were also issued for violations of the Highway Code, with six administrative seizures and a suspended driving license.

Personnel from the Police Headquarters, Carabinieri, Guardia di Finanza, Naples Local Police, Metropolitan Police, and Asia Napoli operators took part in the activities.

Twenty-six quintals of goods removed

The intervention was not limited to the repressive aspect.

Asia Napoli has disposed of approximately 26 quintals of abandoned merchandise and restored urban decorum in the areas affected by the checks, contributing to the return of public spaces to citizens and regular traders.

The Prefect's thanks

Prefect Michele di Bari expressed his appreciation for the work of law enforcement and the operators involved in the operations, emphasizing that the activity represents a further step in the strategy of territorial control aimed at strengthening security, legality, and the protection of free commercial competition.

The goal remains to gradually remove space from the illegal economy and restore decorum and livability to one of the main access points to the city of Naples, crossed daily by thousands of residents and tourists.
