Portici, aunt and nephew died at home for 5 days amidst everyone's indifference

Portici – A silence that lasted five days, broken only by the suspicion of neighbors alerted by a sharp, persistent odor coming from the landing. The lives of Maria Francese, 82, and her nephew Luca Taddeo, 44, ended in dire straits. They were found lifeless at the foot of their bed inside their home in Piazzale Divina Provvidenza, Portici.

No signs of violence

The Carabinieri, along with the Fire Department, responded to the scene, entering the apartment, which had been locked from the inside. Initial investigations by the Forensic Investigations Section revealed no evidence of forced entry or signs of violence on the bodies, which were already in an advanced state of decomposition. The locked door and barred windows currently exclude third-party liability.

The hypothesis of a chain reaction of illnesses

Investigators are leaning toward a tragic death related to the couple's poor health and isolation. The man, an unemployed man originally from the province of Salerno, was living with his elderly aunt—a pensioner with dementia—to care for her after the death of his sister. According to initial reconstructions, the forty-four-year-old died of a sudden heart attack.

The woman, unassisted, unable to self-sufficiency, and unable to call for help, reportedly collapsed in the following days. The recent heatwave, combined with the lack of air conditioning in the home, may have also contributed to the situation.

The bitterness of the institutions

The exact cause of death will be clarified by the autopsy ordered by the judicial authorities at the morgue of the Policlinico Hospital in Naples, where the bodies were transferred. However, the human and social reality of a tragedy that unfolded amid widespread indifference remains.

Portici's mayor, Pasquale Teodonno, also commented on the incident: "This is a deeply troubling tragedy, due to the very sad circumstances, which suggest a state of extreme neglect. For days, no one, no relatives, or acquaintances, was concerned that the two had not given any news. I await the results of the investigators' work to shed light on what happened."
