Naples: Man attacks ATM in Piazza Garibaldi, then sends three police officers to hospital; arrested

Naples: He attempted to pry open the ATM lock by throwing a cobblestone against the bank's window. But the noise attracted attention, and his escape lasted only a few minutes. The hunt was on in Piazza Garibaldi when the alarm went off at the BNL BNP Paribas branch: municipal police officers arrived immediately.

The scene was that of an attempted robbery in broad daylight. The ATM window was damaged, but the robbery was unsuccessful. The White Helmets launched a search and, thanks to video surveillance footage acquired by the bank, located the suspect a short distance away. A 33-year-old non-EU citizen.

When asked to stop, however, the man fought back. A violent fight ensued: three officers were injured and were forced to seek treatment at the nearby Pellegrini Hospital. The 33-year-old was arrested and, by order of the prosecutor on duty, transferred to Poggioreale prison to await trial.

The investigation continues: investigators are now acquiring all the footage from local security cameras to reconstruct the exact sequence of events and verify any possible complicity.
