Elderly scammer arrested in Piano di Sorrento
Piano di Sorrento – Once again, the Sorrento Peninsula proves to be a hostile land for those seeking to enrich themselves at the expense of the most vulnerable. The latest news story involves a 34-year-old man from Ponticelli, who was arrested thanks to the quick wit of an elderly woman and the timely intervention of the Carabinieri.
The scenario is the infamous one, but with a twist designed to appeal to guilt and fear of the law. The victim, an 83-year-old woman living in Piano di Sorrento, received a phone call from a self-styled marshal. The man on the phone concocted a disturbing plot: he described an alleged jewelry store robbery, claiming that one of the arrested criminals had accused the elderly woman of being their accomplice.
To make the whole thing more believable and psychologically oppressive, the scammer pressed the victim: "Ma'am, you must swear to me that you are home alone. Tell me the truth, and remember, you are under oath. Repeat: I swear."
The promise was to resolve the "legal matter" by handing over the money and valuables, which would be checked to determine their legitimate origin.
The plan, however, clashed with the victim's and her daughter's clarity of thought, who immediately recognized the criminal nature of the call. The woman alerted the real Carabinieri at the Piano di Sorrento station.
The police set up a discreet surveillance device, allowing the elderly woman to comply with the scammer's demands to lure him into a trap. When the scammer arrived at the door, he was surprised and stopped by the officers before he could even understand what was happening.
The arrested man is Antonio Truppo, a 34-year-old from Ponticelli, already known to law enforcement. He is currently under house arrest awaiting trial and will face charges of attempted fraud.
The operation confirms, once again, the effectiveness of the widespread information network and territorial control guaranteed by the Carabinieri on the Sorrento Peninsula, a clear warning to anyone intending to set their sights on the elderly in the area.
