Poggioreale: A drone bypasses security checks and delivers hashish to the prison; officers seize a kilo of the drug.

Naples – A new incident confirms the evolution of the techniques used by criminals to supply inmates with drugs. At Poggioreale Prison in Naples, a drone managed to deliver a significant quantity of hashish into the facility, despite the timely intervention of the Penitentiary Police.

The agents intercepted the aircraft and attempted to shoot it down, but the drone, believed to be particularly sophisticated, still managed to complete the delivery of the cargo intended for one of the cells.

The operation, however, failed to achieve the traffickers' desired goal. The officers immediately cordoned off the affected cell and initiated a search, seizing 600 grams of hashish that had just been delivered.

The searches then continued in other sections of the facility, where the Penitentiary Police found and seized another 400 grams of the same narcotic hidden in another cell. In total, approximately one kilogram of hashish was seized from the inmates' possession.

The USPP union has described the incident as yet another demonstration of the growing sophistication of the tools used by organized crime to maintain connections with prison inmates.
"Congratulations to the Penitentiary Police command of the Secondigliano prison, who have once again demonstrated great professionalism and operational capability," declared USPP President Giuseppe Moretti and Regional Secretary Ciro Auricchio.

According to the union, officers are now engaged in a veritable "daily war" against increasingly advanced technologies used to smuggle drugs, cell phones, and other prohibited items into prisons.

Moretti and Auricchio are calling for a significant strengthening of the technological equipment available to the Penitentiary Police.

The union believes it is essential to install jammers, signal inhibitors, and state-of-the-art anti-drone systems, tools deemed essential to preventing mafia organizations, especially those linked to unmanned aircraft, from maintaining contact with the outside world.

Alongside the demand for new technologies, there's also a need for increased staffing. The USPP emphasizes that the Secondigliano prison continues to struggle with a chronic staff shortage, which, compounded by the summer holidays and vacations, forces officers to ensure order and security "only through enormous sacrifice."
