Naples: Worker hit by glass at subway construction site in serious condition

Another serious workplace accident in Naples. This morning, Carabinieri from the Secondigliano station responded to the subway construction site on Via Miano, near the Don Guanella bridge, where a worker was seriously injured during construction.

According to an initial reconstruction, still being examined by investigators, a 60-year-old man, resident of Villaricca, was hit by several heavy sheets of glass that violently struck him in the side.

His condition immediately appeared serious. Emergency medical personnel rushed him to Cardarelli Hospital with a red code, where he was entrusted to the medical staff.

Construction site seized, investigations into the dynamics

After the initial investigations, the Carabinieri placed the construction site area under lockdown to allow for all the necessary technical investigations.

The investigation will clarify how the slabs hit the worker and verify compliance with workplace safety regulations. At this time, several hypotheses have not been ruled out, and the testimonies of colleagues present and the findings of the competent inspectors will be crucial.

Yet another incident reopens the security dossier

The incident on Via Miano is only the latest episode in a long series of accidents that continues to affect construction sites and workplaces in Campania.

A few weeks ago, in Sant'Antonio Abate, two workers fell approximately seven meters while operating a forklift inside a warehouse under construction. Both were hospitalized with critical injuries, and the construction site was sealed off for investigation.

On June 3rd, Naples was the scene of a tragedy that claimed the life of a 63-year-old worker, struck by a reversing truck at a construction site near the former Fiat plant in Poggioreale. The Prosecutor's Office also opened an investigation to determine possible culpability.

Added to these incidents are data from the Vega Safety Observatory, which shows that Campania continues to rank among the Italian regions with the highest risk of workplace fatalities. In the first four months of 2026, 22 fatalities were recorded, with the construction sector remaining one of the most exposed.

Extreme heat and construction sites: an added risk

Summer 2026 was also marked by exceptionally high temperatures, prompting the Campania Region to adopt an ordinance prohibiting outdoor work activities between 12:30 PM and 4:00 PM on the highest-risk days in the construction, agricultural, and related sectors, when the Worklimate system signals high-risk conditions. This measure was specifically designed to reduce the risks associated with heat stress and accidents on construction sites.

Every new workplace accident raises the same question: how important is the safety of those who enter a construction site every day? Behind every statistic are people, families, and communities waiting for answers.

Investigations will determine any responsibilities for individual incidents, but the frequency with which these events continue to occur requires a broader reflection. Training, rigorous controls, work organization, and compliance with procedures cannot be considered mere bureaucratic requirements; they represent fundamental tools to prevent work from becoming a race against fate.

The goal must be one: to prevent yet another serious accident from becoming yet another tragedy waiting to happen.
