The Four Days of Naples: Remembering Neapolitan Heroes in the Fight Against Nazism

Naples – The 1943 popular uprising to regain freedom: the celebrations for the "Four Days of Naples" begin today. An insurrection without class or gender connotations, it saw women and men fighting against the dictatorship and German military occupation.

An example of patriotism and human value that will be commemorated again this year by the City of Naples and the Campania Region with a series of events and exhibitions until October 11th. The seventy-six hours of interrupted fighting will be commemorated with an exhibition, meetings, and testimonies.

The celebrations begin today, September 28, with the laying of laurel wreaths at the symbolic sites of the popular uprising by Mayor Gaetano Manfredi and the President of the Campania Region, Roberto Fico: the Posillipo Mausoleum, at the entrance to the Chamber of Commerce in Piazza Bovio, and at the stele in Piazza Carità commemorating the sacrifice of Salvo D'Aquisto.

This year, the celebrations opened at the Royal Wood of Capodimonte with the naming of the avenue to the Fallen of the Four Days of Naples and the simultaneous presentation of the prototype of the park's new signage, created as part of the larger Royal Wood Toponymy Project.

The initiatives of the Regional Municipality are joined by those of the ANPI, the Partisans' Association, which will hold a meeting tomorrow, September 29th, at 10:00 a.m., dedicated to the remembrance of the Four Days at the Campania Institute for the History of the Resistance, Anti-Fascism, and the Contemporary Age in Fuorigrotta.

On Tuesday, September 29th, the book "Indomita. The Four Days of Naples. September 27-30, 1943" by Domenico Pennone will be presented, organized by the ANPI Collinare "Aedo Violante" and Vomero-Arenella "Vincenzo Siniscalchi" sections, in collaboration with the "Io Ci Sto" bookshop, as part of the "Memoria Attiva" series. On Wednesday, at 10:00 a.m., Materdei will host a commemoration of Carmine Muselli, one of the heroes of the Four Days of Naples.

Also at Materdei, there will be a documentary exhibition dedicated to the "Four Days of Naples" and in memory of the victims, curated by the Museum of Naples – Bonelli Collection in collaboration with the Casa dello Scugnizzo Foundation. Marches, initiatives, and exhibitions will continue until October 11th.
