Mugnano, a woman gives birth in her bathroom at home, and the baby dies: Carabinieri investigate.

A birth that turned tragic. It happened last night in Mugnano, on Via dei Fiori, a short distance from the Vallefuoco stadium, where a 31-year-old woman gave birth in the bathroom of her home. When the alarm was raised, the situation was already extremely delicate, and 118 paramedics arrived on the scene.

The woman was rescued and rushed to the San Giuliano Hospital in Giugliano, where she arrived in critical condition. Medical personnel immediately began the necessary procedures to stabilize her, and after medical intervention, the 31-year-old was safely evacuated.
She remains hospitalized, under observation, deeply affected by what happened and by the loss of her daughter.

The newborn didn't make it

For the little girl, however, every attempt to save her life proved futile. Her heart stopped beating, leaving behind a tragedy whose every step must now be reconstructed in detail.

At this time, in fact, it is not possible to establish based on the available information alone what the causes of death were and, above all, whether there were circumstances that occurred during childbirth or immediately after birth that could have influenced the outcome.

This is precisely one of the aspects on which the investigations will have to focus.

The Carabinieri's investigations

The Carabinieri of Mugnano and Marano intervened on the scene, called to reconstruct what happened inside the house on Via dei Fiori.

Investigators will have to verify the timeline of events, the conditions of the mother and the newborn when rescuers arrived, and above all the circumstances surrounding the birth.

The reconstruction will necessarily require the use of available medical evidence. Therefore, the assessments of the doctors who provided first aid and the health workers at San Giuliano Hospital will be crucial, as will any forensic tests that may be ordered to clarify the cause of the child's death.

For now, therefore, the investigation is moving towards reconstructing the facts and no evidence has emerged that would allow us to attribute responsibility to anyone.

The issue of home birth

The tragedy inevitably brings attention to the issue of home birth, which, however, cannot be addressed by automatically superimposing a dramatic event onto a specific cause-effect relationship.

In Italy, home birth is considered a possible care option in selected cases of low-risk pregnancies, subject to specific organizational criteria and conditions. The National Federation of Midwifery Orders (FNOPO) identifies risk assessment and the presence of qualified personnel as key elements; in a 2026 communication, FNOPO also emphasizes that home birth may be considered in selected low-risk cases, with the presence of two qualified midwives and compliance with safety criteria.

The main problem is the possibility that a seemingly physiological situation can rapidly become complicated. The Ministry of Health's own standards emphasize that labor and delivery, while physiological events, can quickly become complicated, and that care arrangements must be tailored to the level of maternal and fetal risk.

This is the main difference compared to a hospital birth: in a healthcare facility, monitoring, obstetric and gynecological care, neonatal resuscitation, an operating room, transfusions and other tools necessary to deal with sudden emergencies are immediately available.

This doesn't mean, of course, that every home birth is automatically dangerous or that a hospital birth eliminates all risk. Rather, it means that early screening for low-risk pregnancies and ensuring timely transfer to the hospital are essential elements of out-of-hospital care.

In Mugnano's case, however, it will be necessary to await further investigations to determine what actually happened. Only a forensic reconstruction will be able to clarify whether the newborn's death was caused by a complication during birth, a preexisting condition, or other factors.

A fundamental distinction to prevent a tragedy yet to be reconstructed from being transformed, without evidence, into a conclusion about the causes.
