Naples, the mystery surrounding the death of young pizza chef Antonio Nardi: he fled on a scooter with two others

Naples – It was around 2 a.m. between Tuesday and Wednesday when the scooter stopped on Via Nuova, also known as Casoria, in the Bussola district of San Pietro a Patierno. This street on the northern outskirts of Naples, not far from Capodichino, was the scene of a fatal accident that is still being reconstructed.

According to investigators' initial reconstruction, three people were riding the motorcycle, all wearing helmets. Upon seeing a Municipal Police patrol, the driver allegedly accelerated, causing the vehicle to flee. The scooter then sped down the road until the driver lost control.

The fall was violent. Antonio Nardi, who was traveling as a passenger, was thrown onto the asphalt, suffering multiple injuries, including a very serious chest injury. According to initial evidence, the young man may have also struck a lamppost located on the edge of the road.

Emergency responders responded quickly and provided the 26-year-old with first aid, transferring him to the Ospedale del Mare hospital with a red code. However, his condition was desperate. Despite paramedics' efforts, his condition worsened, and Antonio Nardi died from the severe injuries sustained in the crash. The news was subsequently reported by local news outlets, while photos and messages of condolence began to flood social media.

The mystery of what happened before

The investigation focuses primarily on what happened in the minutes leading up to the crash. Officers from the Naples Local Police's Road Accident Unit are trying to reconstruct every aspect of the incident: where the scooter came from, why the driver decided to accelerate when he saw the patrol car, and, above all, what prompted the escape.

Investigators are seeking evidence through witness statements, any CCTV footage in the area, and other evidence gathered during the investigation. Investigators are also investigating an attempted robbery.

According to initial reports, after the crash, the other two occupants of the scooter fled the scene and disappeared. This aspect is also being examined by investigators in an attempt to reconstruct the overall picture.

Nardi's death also takes on a special meaning in light of the young man's personal history. Antonio had endured a difficult life as a teenager, even spending time in the Nisida juvenile detention center.

Then came the opportunity to change career paths through professional training and work. His story was also covered by the Bergamo press in 2020, when Nardi, then twenty years old, was working as a pizza chef in Bergamo after completing a training program linked to the "Scugnizzi" association.

The young man had learned the trade in Naples and then gained experience in various Italian cities.
Pizza had thus become not only a job, but also a tool for building a different life. The story published at the time depicted the journey of a young man who had left his previous troubles with the law behind and was looking forward to the possibility of returning to Naples and opening his own business.

This is also the dimension that emerges today from the messages of friends: that of a young man who had tried to build a second chance for himself and who had found his path to redemption in the profession of pizza chef.
