Campi Flegrei earthquake: hate against Neapolitans erupts on social media: "Vesuvius, take care of it!"

While residents of Campi Flegrei are coping with the fear and damage caused by the latest earthquakes, another sad chapter of incivility is unfolding on social media. In the aftermath of the earthquake, several users flooded the internet with racist comments and hateful messages, even calling for the eruption of Vesuvius to save the lives of Neapolitans.

This phenomenon sparked an immediate and harsh political reaction. Francesco Emilio Borrelli, MP for the Green and Left Alliance, strongly condemned the incident, also highlighting the paradox of ignorance underlying such insults:

“We are facing an extremely worrying cultural and human drift, but also one of pure ignorance: those who hate don't even know that Vesuvius has nothing to do with the volcanic structure of the Phlegraean Fields.”

The answer: widespread reporting

The MP expressed dismay at the lack of empathy in the face of a trauma that is affecting thousands of families anguished for their future:

It's disconcerting that, rather than expressing sympathy and support, there are those who prefer to fuel hatred and wish death upon others. In times of greatest difficulty, solidarity and humanity should prevail over all forms of malice.

Borrelli finally announced concrete action to combat the phenomenon, launching an appeal to internet users:

We won't turn a blind eye. We will collect and report every single racist, discriminatory, and defamatory comment directed at the citizens of Naples and the Phlegraean Fields. We invite all citizens to send us their reports: it's a fundamental battle of civility, respect, and empathy for those facing a dramatic moment.
