Cyclist dies on Via Marina, appeal for Puffy: "Umberto's dog is looking for a new family."

The death of Umberto Sarnacchiaro, 64, has reignited the debate over the safety of Via Nuova Marina. The cyclist died after being struck while riding on the road. An investigation is underway to clarify the circumstances of the accident and determine any liability.

MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli and Municipality 1 Councilor Lorenzo Pascucci met with Stefania, the victim's niece. According to the family, Sarnacchiaro was struck while overtaking on the right at high speed by two young men who were apparently on their way to the stadium for the Napoli match. This reconstruction will need to be verified by investigators.

The family also reports that traces of blood are still present at the scene of the tragedy and that the area has not been cleaned up. Of particular concern is the report that the man's purse was missing while he lay lifeless on the asphalt.

"The shoulder strap is gone. They took away not only his life, but his dignity. Until the funeral, I'll continue to see my uncle here, on the ground," Stefania said.

Borrelli also points the finger at road conditions and illegal parking, which, according to his complaint, narrows the roadway.

"The Via Marina incident is a tragedy that cannot be dismissed as a simple accident. For years, we've been denouncing a road where illegal parking and the constant presence of vehicles and other vehicles reduce the roadway and make even normal maneuvers dangerous," the MP stated.

"If that overtaking had been possible without the lane being narrowed by parked vehicles, perhaps we'd be talking about a different story today. But the investigation will determine that," Borrelli adds.

High speeds, especially at night, are also in the spotlight. "At night, this road often becomes a racetrack for groups of young people who drive at crazy speeds," the MP claims, calling for "real checks, stricter speed limits, and a comprehensive overhaul of the road system."

Borrelli also cites the experience of other cities and cites Bologna as an example for the introduction of the 30 km/h speed limit, while criticizing Transport Minister Matteo Salvini's actions on road safety.

The purse affair remains to be clarified. "If it's confirmed that Umberto's purse was stolen while he was lying dying or already dead on the asphalt, we would be faced with an act of absolute barbarity," Borrelli states. "This man would have been robbed of not only his life, but also his dignity. It's unacceptable."

Meanwhile, the family is also facing another emergency. Puffy, Umberto Sarnacchiaro's dog, is left alone, and Stefania has launched an appeal to find him a new home.
