Naples: Man driving a stolen car attempts to steal another: arrested

Naples – During the night between Monday and Tuesday, a patrol from the Operations Unit was traveling along Via Sartania when they noticed, in a municipal rest area, a gray Renault Clio parked next to a black Nissan Qashqai.

The Qashqai had its engine running, the lights off, and one door open. Upon approaching, officers saw the left front window shattered. A man was attempting to exit from the right side and was apprehended at the scene. He was Franco Maffei, 41. When searched, he was found in possession of a brooch and three gold earrings with diamonds.

He admitted to having previously stolen them from another car. Among the glass fragments inside the Qashqai, the Carabinieri also recovered the iron bar used to break the window. The man had arrived in the Renault Clio. When questioned, he casually explained that he had stolen it two or three days earlier on Via San Donato and had been using it ever since.

The car was actually stolen on September 21st and was returned to its owner. Maffei was transferred to prison awaiting trial.
