Tensions are high in Avellino prison: a violent inmate injures an inspector and sets the house on fire.

A war bulletin that once again shines a spotlight on prison security in Campania. This is the outcome of yesterday's difficult day inside the Avellino prison, marked by a double emergency that severely tested the professionalism and resilience of the Penitentiary Police.

The chaos was triggered by an inmate held in the common section who, in an escalation of violence, committed serious damage to furniture before moving on to a direct physical attack on the staff on duty.

The attack on the General Surveillance

The first crisis erupted when the man went berserk, lashing out with unprecedented violence at the inspector on duty at the General Surveillance Unit. During the scuffle, the inmate grabbed and threw a heavy desk at the officer, hitting him squarely.

The impact required immediate medical attention from the prison infirmary. In addition to injuring the inspector, the incident resulted in the destruction of property and furnishings.

The beginning of the fire in the cell

The tension didn't subside with the first intervention. In the afternoon, the same inmate continued his devastating action by barricading himself in his cell.
Here, he destroyed the existing furnishings and started a fire. The thick smoke released inside the premises made the air unbreathable and made the operation extremely risky.

Only the promptness and courage of the Penitentiary Police officers prevented the situation from degenerating into a much more serious tragedy.

The union's cry of alarm

The incident immediately mobilized worker representatives. The UIL FP Penitentiary Police of Avellino, through its director Raffaele Troise, expressed solidarity with the injured inspector and commended the officers who intervened.

"We cannot consider it normal for an operator to be injured while on duty and then, a few hours later, have to intervene due to a small fire," thunders Troise. "The courage and professionalism of individuals cannot be the only barrier to safety decline. We need adequate staffing, operational tools, and organization."

The request to the prison administration is clear: enough with superficial solidarity; concrete and immediate responses are needed to protect the safety of those who wear the uniform.
