Inmates protest over lack of hot water, tensions escalate in Avellino prison.

It was a night of intense tension at the Avellino Prison, where an incident reportedly occurred in the Municipality Section, which, according to the UILFP Penitentiary Police, risked escalating.

The incidents reportedly occurred shortly before midnight, when several inmates failed to return to the detention floor as scheduled. This situation rapidly escalated tension within the unit.

According to the union's reconstruction, the inmates even attempted to force the barrier using a cart used to transport food.

According to initial information gathered, the protest was apparently sparked by the lack of hot water.

The intervention of the agents

The intervention of the General Surveillance, supported by the officers present on duty, prevented the situation from becoming more serious.

Despite the particularly difficult operational situation and staff shortages, the operators were able to gradually bring the situation under control.

Fabio Ciampi, UILFP Penitentiary Police delegate, emphasized the professionalism demonstrated by the officers.

According to Ciampi, the staff faced particularly critical moments, yet managed the emergency promptly and professionally.

“Colleagues forced to work in difficult conditions”

The union therefore once again places emphasis on the operating conditions within the Avellino prison facility.

Ciampi also highlighted the position of some inmates who, according to the union, have engaged in behavior deemed inappropriate for life in prison wards and who, despite this, continue to remain in the facility.

For UILFP, this is an issue that deserves particular attention from the Administration, especially in light of the tensions occurring within the departments.

UILFP raises the alarm: "The situation is critical."

Raffaele Troise, head of the UILFP Penitentiary Police, gave a very harsh speech, identifying overcrowding and staff shortages as two of the facility's main critical issues.

The union claims the situation has now reached a particularly delicate point, with officers called upon to operate daily in increasingly difficult conditions.

For Troise, last night's episode represents a further sign of the fragility of the balance within the prison.

"We cannot continue to ask officers to address every situation with professionalism and a sense of duty, without addressing the causes that continually generate tension," is the position expressed by the union leader.

Finally, UILFP would like to thank the men of the General Surveillance and all the operators who were on duty during the episode.

For the union, the management of the situation once again demonstrates the staff's ability to navigate particularly delicate moments even in the face of difficult operating conditions.

But, beyond the specific episode, the UILFP is raising a new alarm regarding the overall situation at the Avellino prison.

Overcrowding, ward safety, and staff shortages are, according to the organization, issues that require structural interventions and no longer occasional solutions.

The union fears that, without adequate measures, tensions could increase further.

“We cannot wait for the irreparable to happen before intervening,” is the final warning from the UILFP Penitentiary Police.
