Envelope with bullet and threatening letter to Valditara

An envelope containing a 7,65 caliber bullet and a threatening letter was delivered in recent weeks to the Minister of Education and Merit, Giuseppe Valditara, who filed a complaint with law enforcement. The envelope was addressed to the head of the MIM and arrived at the ministry's Rome headquarters. Inside, in addition to the inert firearm, a document alleging irregularities in the issuing of diplomas by private schools in the province of Salerno.

What was in the envelope and when did it arrive?

According to reports circulating in several newspapers, the letter arrived in early August and was sent by anonymous individuals from Salerno. Its threatening content prompted the minister to file a complaint, while investigations are underway to reconstruct its origin and identify the authors.

The reactions of the government and institutions

The news provoked an immediate and cross-party reaction from the executive branch and institutional officials.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wrote on social media: "I express my full solidarity and that of the Government to Minister Giuseppe Valditara for the serious threats he has received. A bullet and a threatening letter are cowardly acts of intimidation that have no place in a democracy," hoping for "a clear and unanimous condemnation from all political forces."

Antonio Tajani, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, reiterated: "If anyone thinks they can stop our government's action with threats and violence, they are gravely mistaken. I send a hug to Giuseppe; I'm sure he won't be intimidated."

Matteo Salvini, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure, expressed his "full solidarity and closeness to Giuseppe Valditara for the very serious threats he has received."

Ignazio La Russa, President of the Senate, expressed his "full and sincere solidarity" with the minister, expressing his hope that "the perpetrators of this act can be quickly identified by the competent authorities."

Lorenzo Fontana, Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, condemned "intimidation and violence, in whatever form they manifest," extending his solidarity with Valditara and his family.

Within the majority, Family Minister Eugenia Roccella called the method "terrorist," arguing that the target was a minister who "worked to protect minors, teachers, and the alliance between school and family."

From the Democratic Party, national school representative Irene Manzi stated: "Violence and intimidation must never enter into political and institutional debate. Every threat and every episode of violence must be firmly condemned."

The context: further tensions over school reforms

The incident comes amid intense polarization surrounding the reforms of the ministry led by Valditara, including regulations on safety, integration, and school-family relations, which have sparked political and union conflict. Sources close to the minister have described the text of the letter as "raving," suggesting the actions of "someone unbalanced," while investigations are ongoing to determine motives and responsibilities.
