The Secondigliano prison
Naples – A normal workday turned into a new episode of violence inside the Secondigliano prison in Naples. A psychiatric inmate attacked six prison officers serving in the Adriatic ward, requiring their emergency transfer to the CTO hospital in Naples.
Vincenzo Palmieri, regional secretary of OSAPP (Autonomous Union of Penitentiary Police) in Campania, announced the news. Fortunately, the physical consequences for the personnel involved do not appear to be serious, limited to bruises and minor trauma, which were treated promptly by paramedics.
The dynamics and immediate intervention
The attack occurred inside the Adriatic ward. According to initial reports, the inmate, originally from Salerno—whose psychiatric management requires special attention and protocols—suddenly lost control, lashing out at the staff. He resisted the transfer of a cellmate and flew into a rage.
And since he was a physically very strong individual, it took the intervention of numerous officers to subdue him. The man was subdued by the other officers who intervened to assist him and immediately placed in solitary confinement.
The episode forcefully reopens the debate on working conditions within Campania's prisons, marked by daily tensions and a chronic lack of resources and adequate space for the management of individuals with psychiatric problems.
"On behalf of the union, we wish a speedy recovery to the colleagues injured in this cowardly attack," said Vincenzo Palmieri, regional secretary of OSAPP Campania. "We can no longer tolerate the daily jeopardization of workers' safety."
Faced with this latest criticality, OSAPP announces aggressive union initiatives against the prison administration's top management. At the heart of the demands is an immediate depletion plan aimed at reducing overcrowding, which continues to be alarmingly high both among the male prison population and in the Aegean section, where more than one hundred women are currently held.
