Caught in the municipal offices and stopped while attempting to escape with computers, tablets, and other items, the State Police arrested a man believed to be responsible for a theft inside the municipal building in Castel Volturno, in the province of Caserta. He was placed under house arrest.
The operation began in the early hours of the morning, following a report of a theft in progress received by the Caserta Police Headquarters operations center. Officers from the Castel Volturno police station's flying squad arrived at the town hall, where an employee had shortly before noticed a man in the registry office and immediately raised the alarm.
While checking the outside area, officers spotted the suspect exiting through an emergency door with a plastic bag. He was stopped and searched, finding a laptop, a tablet, and other items, including tools.
The investigations, conducted with the support of the forensic police, allowed them to reconstruct how the man entered the building. It emerged that he used a window that had been left open due to a fault.
The situation inside the town hall appeared particularly dire. Officers found damage on all three floors, with doors broken into, cabinets forced open, and rooms ransacked. A safe was also found in the registry office, along with various tools that had apparently been used to force entry and furnishings.
The recovered computer equipment was identified as belonging to the municipality, while one of the tools found was seized. Further checks revealed that the man had a criminal record for property crimes.
After his arrest, the man was placed under house arrest. His status will be assessed by the judicial authorities during the proceedings, respecting the presumption of innocence until a final conviction.
