Railway lines flooded
The orange alert issued by the regional Civil Protection Department triggers the suspension of EAV rail services on the Vesuvian and Phlegraean lines. This decision is based on the expected weather conditions in Campania, which, however, will have severe repercussions on mobility this afternoon, particularly for thousands of commuters heading to Naples and the Phlegraean Fields.
The Ente Autonomo Volturno announced that, starting at 3:00 PM, rail services would be suspended, with replacement services being activated. However, according to the company's announcement, the Naples-Pedimonte line and the Piscinola-Aversa metro line will remain operational.
The announcement of the suspension took many passengers by surprise. In some cases, according to passengers themselves, even staff found themselves having to deal with situations that had escalated quickly.
The disruptions were concentrated at the Piazza Garibaldi station, one of the city's main railway hubs. Thousands of passengers on the Vesuvian lines arrive and depart here every day, and it is precisely here that the new transport emergency has materialized.
"There are no trains," is the phrase passed from one traveler to another as they arrive at the station. Those arriving at the station include some of the last passengers able to ride the trains that were guaranteed before the shutdown went into effect.
Faced with the suspension of services, those who can are trying to use Ferrovie dello Stato trains, especially for travel to Salerno and Castellammare di Stabia.
For everyone else, the alternative remains the replacement buses provided by EAV. This option, however, at least initially, will not prevent further difficulties.
The replacement routes announced by the company must contend with heavy traffic, which inevitably slows road travel. The result is a wait and uncertainty for passengers, who are forced to find alternative options to reach home, work, or Naples.
The train disruption comes on a day marked by an orange alert and the resulting safety measures adopted in anticipation of worsening weather conditions.
But the immediate effect is to put pressure on the regional mobility system, with particular reference to the areas served by the Vesuvian and Phlegraean lines.
With crowded stations, replacement trains to organize, and traffic on the roads, the bad weather also turns into a transport emergency for thousands of citizens.
