The scene of the accident and Nicola Esposito in the box
Yet another life lost on the road, and two young people fighting for their lives. This is the tragic outcome of the road accident that occurred yesterday morning, around 6:00 a.m., on the Telesina state road, near the outskirts of the municipality of Pietravairano.
The victim was Nicola Esposito, just 19 years old, originally from Sant'Anastasia. Two friends, aged 26 and 23, were traveling with him and suffered serious injuries. Esposito was rushed to the Cardarelli Hospital in Naples, while Esposito is hospitalized in Caserta.
According to initial reports, the small car carrying the three teenagers collided head-on with a tractor-trailer traveling in the opposite direction; a second vehicle was also involved in the collision. The extremely violent impact left the nineteen-year-old with no chance of survival.
The intervention of the Fire Brigade from the Teano Detachment was necessary to extract the young man's body from the crumpled wreckage. The 118 paramedics and the Carabinieri from the Capua Company promptly arrived on the scene.
Both the driver of the truck and the driver of the third vehicle were uninjured. As is standard practice, the driver of the heavy vehicle underwent tests to determine whether he was fit to drive at the time of the impact. His license was suspended, and the vehicle was seized. It will be up to the Carabinieri, coordinated by the Santa Maria Capua Vetere Prosecutor's Office, to determine the exact circumstances of the accident and any liability.
News of yet another tragedy on the Caserta roads has rekindled the debate over the precarious safety conditions on the highway. The general secretaries of the FILT CGIL Campania, Avellino-Benevento, and Caserta—Angelo Lustro, Giuseppe Anzalone, and Tommaso Pascarella, respectively—reacted to the incident with a joint statement.
"We express our deepest condolences to the victim's family and our sympathy to the injured," union representatives stated. "This serious accident raises a pressing issue: the safety of a vital artery for thousands of workers, commuters, and truck drivers.
In accordance with the ongoing investigations, it is clear that structural interventions are needed. The doubling of the Telesina line must become a national priority with certain resources and a transparent timeline. We cannot continue to wait for the deaths and injuries to remind us of the urgency of action.
The news spread quickly in Sant'Anastasia, Nicola Esposito's hometown, where the nineteen-year-old was well-known and respected. The entire community is currently in a state of shock and deep grief. The funeral will have to wait until the autopsy ordered by the judicial authorities is completed, while the family remains highly anxious about the condition of the two young friends who are still hospitalized.
