Via Domitiana flooded, traffic blocked in Giugliano
Friday, October 9th, was marked by a severe weather disturbance in Campania, prompting the regional Civil Protection Department to maintain an orange weather alert until 3:00 PM for much of the region, particularly in Zone 1 (Campania Plain, Naples, the Vesuvian area, and the Gulf Islands).
Due to heavy rainfall, the road surface of state road 7 "Quater Via Domitiana" was flooded between kilometers 46,800 and 43,100, near Giugliano in Campania. The roadway was closed in both directions, with mandatory exits at Varcaturo for those coming from Rome and at Giugliano for those heading towards Naples.
Anas teams and law enforcement officers responded to the scene, managing traffic and attempting to restore normal traffic flow as quickly as possible.
In the regional capital, the orange alert has imposed a series of precautionary closures. City parks and numerous outdoor sports facilities remain closed, including the Ascarelli, the Antonio Juliano/Caduti di Brema, the San Pietro a Patierno, the Soccavo multipurpose sports center, the Nestore multipurpose sports center, the Palavesuvio, and the Virgiliano.
The Maradona Stadium athletics track and the city cemeteries have also been closed to ensure the safety of residents and workers in the event of further rain or lightning.
The weather warning prompted many mayors to order the suspension of classes for today. Schools in 46 municipalities in Campania, including Capri, remained closed.
In Salerno, the mayor ordered the closure of the Torquato Tasso middle school on Via Michele Iannicelli, where maintenance work is underway following water infiltration. During the night, the capital city of Salerno experienced thunderstorms with intense electrical activity and heavy downpours that continued until 7:30 a.m.
Irpinia has also been hit by heavy rainfall. At the Montevergine Meteorological Observatory, 53,8 mm of rain has fallen since midnight, adding to the 41 mm recorded yesterday, for a total of over 90 mm in 24 hours.
The forecast indicates that the day will continue with unstable weather, with the risk of further precipitation, especially in the second part of the afternoon.
While the orange alert remains in effect for Naples and Zone 1, the yellow weather alert remains in effect for the rest of Campania until 15 PM, requiring vigilance due to possible local issues related to hydrogeological instability.
