From America to Salerno to find their aviator uncle killed in the war: after 83 years, the family returns to the crash site.

Salerno – She crossed the ocean to pursue a family story that had been dormant for 83 years. Cheri Stewart, arriving from Philadelphia, reached the Salerno area with a specific goal: to see with her own eyes the mountains where, in 1943, her uncle Charles M. Stewart, a young American aviator just twenty years old, died.

A journey born from a family legacy of memories, silences, and unanswered questions. Cheri's brother had spent much of his life preserving his uncle's memory, collecting documents and testimonies about his story. Her father, however, had chosen not to speak about that tragedy, which was too painful to face.

After her brother's death, Cheri decided to take up the baton and leave for Italy.

Research in the mountains of Salerno

The volunteers of the Salerno 1943 Association, who have been reconstructing the events surrounding Operation Avalanche through military documents, testimonies, and artifacts, guided her to the crash site.

The inspection became particularly intense when, among the vegetation, a metal fragment believed to be attributable to the B-17 was identified.

A small piece of metal, left on the ground for decades, took on enormous significance for the Stewart family: a tangible trace capable of reconnecting the present to a tragedy that occurred during the war.

The bomber hit by anti-aircraft fire

Charles M. Stewart's story dates back to the era of Operation Avalanche. The B-17 he was flying was returning from a mission over the Foggia airfields when it was intercepted and severely damaged by anti-aircraft fire and Axis fighters.

Two engines out of action and the plane in critical condition forced Captain Bernard B. Pasero to order an evacuation. The ten crew members ejected at different times.

Stewart, who was assigned to the side gunner, managed to reach the ground but suffered serious leg wounds. He died the next day.

He was initially buried in Italy, in the Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi cemetery. In 1952, his body was returned to his family and transferred to the United States.

A history reconstructed through documents and testimonies

Matteo Pierro, historical representative of the Salerno 1943 Association and author of the book Salerno 1943. The aviators, stories and findings of Operation Avalanche, reconstructed the crash in detail.

The history of the B-17 was explored together with Luigi Fortunato and Gigino Vitolo, a resident of the hamlet at the foot of the hill, bringing together historical documentation, testimonies, and traces still present in the area.

It is precisely this work that today allows the descendants of those soldiers to give a face and a place to events that, for decades, remained confined to military documents and family memories.

"The war doesn't end when the guns fall silent."

"Cheri crossed the ocean to remember a family member who died during the war," Vincenzo Pellegrino, president of the Salerno 1943 Association, told ANSA.

A journey that, according to Pellegrino, demonstrates how alive the memory of Operation Avalanche and of those men who arrived in Italy from thousands of kilometers away still is.

“Operation Avalanche isn’t just a page in the history books: it’s still alive in families, even thousands of miles away,” he emphasizes.

And Cheri Stewart's journey seems to embody precisely this meaning: the memory of a war can cross generations, overcome oceans and decades and return exactly to the place where it all ended.

"If, after more than eighty years, a woman crosses an ocean to reach the place where her uncle died," Pellegrino concludes, "it means that the consequences of a conflict don't end when the guns fall silent. Preserving these stories means remembering the value of peace."
