Two hundred million euros for the cleanup of the Land of Fires and an 11 million fund for municipalities dealing with pollution, ecological deterioration, and climate impacts that do not reach the state of emergency threshold.
These are some of the measures included in the draft Environmental Decree, expected to be examined by the Council of Ministers today. The measure, as reported by ANSA, also addresses the procedures for identifying those responsible for contamination and initiating emergency safety measures.
For the Land of Fires, this marks a new chapter in the remediation process of an area encompassing parts of the provinces of Naples and Caserta, which remains central to Campania's environmental policies. In recent weeks, joint enforcement operations against the illegal transportation and management of waste have also been intensified, with particular attention to the areas most affected by the phenomenon.
The decree also aims to strengthen environmental investigations and speed up the implementation of interventions envisaged by the NRRP and the PNIEC (National Integrated Plan for Energy and Climate). The text also provides resources to reimburse the increased costs associated with delays in investigations.
Other new measures include reporting requirements for bottle manufacturers regarding the use of recycled PET and new regulations regarding the use of excavated soil and rocks on construction sites.
The measure comes as institutional work continues in the Land of Fires, with cleanups, environmental monitoring, and inspections involving the Region, the government commissioner's office, prefectures, and law enforcement. The Campania Region itself has designated cleanup and environmental protection among its institutional priorities.
