Naples: Man hides over €21 in counterfeit banknotes behind a magnetic mezzanine floor; 51-year-old arrested

High-impact police checks continue unabated in central Naples. During a search and patrol operation that combed the streets of the Pendino neighborhood, Carabinieri officers from the Stella Company arrested Giuseppe Patrociello, a 51-year-old Neapolitan man already known to law enforcement.

The blitz and the magnetic hiding place

The search of the man's home was originally aimed at combating drug trafficking. The Operations Unit officers recovered 28 grams of marijuana inside the apartment.

What caught the investigators' attention during their searches, however, was an unexpected structural detail: a carefully crafted cavity held together by a sophisticated system of magnets, designed to support a small mezzanine level invisible to the untrained eye.

Over 21 euros in 100-euro bills "from experts"

Believing they had located a drug stash, the Carabinieri removed the panel, only to find a substantial sum of cash instead: dozens of bundles of 100-euro notes, totaling 21.800 euros. The banknotes, seemingly pristine and of exceptional workmanship, required a thorough technical examination.

The intervention of the Anti-Counterfeiting Unit of the Carabinieri of Naples confirmed the nature of the cash: they were high-quality fake reproductions, capable of deceiving normal commercial circulation.

The ongoing investigations and the judicial situation

Giuseppe Patrociello (born in Naples on August 7, 1975) was arrested and taken to prison. He will face charges of possession of narcotics with intent to distribute and possession of counterfeit currency.

The operation is part of a broader effort to combat the trafficking and production of counterfeit euros in the Naples area, a key hub for currency counterfeiting where multiple raids and large-scale seizures by law enforcement have recently occurred. Investigations are continuing to reconstruct the origin of the banknotes and identify their distribution channels.
