The Sarno River
The Sarno River has become a strategic priority for Campania. The Regional Council unanimously approved the resolution, shared by both the majority and opposition, at the end of a single-issue session dedicated to the restoration of the river and its basin.
The document commits to translating available resources and tools into clear timelines, completed projects, and concretely verifiable results. The planned actions focus on securing the Sarno River, accelerating environmental remediation, protecting the basin's hydraulics, maintaining and completing the sewerage and wastewater treatment system, and overall dredging.
The project also includes the construction of an integrated system of flood and detention basins, along with the integrated environmental system for the basin. This plan is part of the four-year framework agreement worth approximately €407 million, divided into seven lots and already put out to tender by the Campania Region.
"We summarized the work done because common sense and the regional community's interest in achieving the goal of ensuring the safety of the Sarno River through a systemic approach prevailed," explained Salvatore Flocco, chairman of the Environment Committee, who read the resolution in the chamber.
The planned interventions also include an integrated environmental monitoring system for the entire basin. Regarding the flood and retention basins, the goal is to rapidly complete the works already planned, restore full functionality, and, where necessary, strengthen them along the Sarno River and its tributaries.
The sewerage and wastewater treatment program launched in 2020, in collaboration with the Campania Water Authority and the integrated water service provider, will also continue. Among the objectives is the closure of the nine remaining sewer outlets, located primarily in the Scafati area.
Mario Casillo, Vice President of the Regional Council and Councilor for the Sea, emphasized the work done in recent years to reduce authorized municipal discharges. "The results achieved indicate an improvement in the situation, but we are not yet at the levels expected. We want excellence and will continue to work on illegal discharges," he stated.
Environment Councilor Claudia Pecoraro instead highlighted the territorial dimension of the issue. "We're not simply talking about a waterway, but about an area that crosses three provinces and affects 700 inhabitants," she stated. "We're talking about environmental protection, and we need to make citizens aware of what's happening."
The resolution, approved without a single vote, thus signals the Regional Council's consensus on the need to accelerate interventions to improve hydraulic safety and remediate the Sarno basin, with the aim of transforming planned commitments into measurable results.
