Grazia Botta
The Nocera Inferiore Public Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation into the death of Grazia Botta, the 21-year-old from Siano who died last Friday in the intensive care unit of the Gaetano Fucito hospital in Mercato San Severino.
Investigators' goal is to shed full light on the young woman's final weeks of life, reconstructing her medical history and determining any medical liability.
According to what has been reconstructed so far, the dramatic story began last July, when the young woman underwent bariatric surgery for obesity at a health facility in the Naples area. The operation appeared to be successful without any immediate complications, allowing Grazia to return home to Siano.
However, in recent days, due to a sudden and rapid deterioration in his health, he was again admitted to the hospital, this time at the Fucito Hospital in Mercato San Severino. For about a week, his family endured hours of profound anguish, hoping for an improvement that, unfortunately, never came. He passed away on Friday morning in the intensive care unit.
Faced with such a sudden and dramatic disappearance, the family decided to seek clarity by filing a formal complaint with the judiciary.
The Nocera Inferiore Prosecutor's Office has ordered the seizure of the 21-year-old's body and the acquisition of all medical records and documents relating to her treatment. Investigators will need to clarify both the legality of the original surgery performed in the Naples area and the appropriateness and timeliness of the care provided during her terminal hospitalization at the Valle dell'Irno facility.
In the hours following the news's release, a formal clarification regarding the responsibilities of the healthcare facilities involved became necessary. "Contrary to what emerged from an initial summary reconstruction, the Gaetano Fucito Hospital in Mercato San Severino does not perform bariatric surgery: the young woman was admitted there only at a later stage, when her condition was already critical, and was urgently admitted to the intensive care unit. The geographical and structural distinction between the site of the surgery and the site of her subsequent death is a key element on which investigators are focusing their technical investigations."
The news has deeply shocked the entire community of Siano, where Grazia Botta was known and loved by all as a cheerful, smiling girl full of zest for life. The operation she underwent three months ago represented the beginning of a new chapter and a new perspective on her life.
During these hours of mourning, messages of condolence are pouring in for her parents, brother, grandparents, and her fiancé, Carmine De Maio, who has dedicated heartbreaking words to her on social media. The priority now remains to entrust the justice system and the autopsy with the task of establishing the scientific and judicial truth, with the utmost respect for the grief that has affected the entire citizenry.
