Naples, restoration of the Faun with cymbals in Villa Comunale completed

Naples, the restoration of the Faun with cymbals in Villa Comunale has been completed. This is what the Municipality of Naples said in a note.

“Thanks to the agreement between the Municipal Administration and the MACS Association, Patrons of the Arts, Cinema and Sport, chaired by notary Roberto Dante Cogliandro, the restoration of the Faun with Cymbals, the first of the 8 statues placed on the entrance front of the Villa Comunale, on the Piazza Vittoria side, has been completed”.

The project was presented this morning during the inspection carried out by the mayor Gaetano Manfredi with the councilors for Green, Vincenzo Santagada, and for Infrastructure, Edoardo Cosenza.

The eight sculptures of the Villa undergoing restoration, from the neoclassical period, copies of statues from the Roman era and depicting mythological subjects on high bases, are almost all works by the Genoese sculptor Tommaso Soleri (one of the two statues of Hercules with Faun was instead made by the Roman Andrea Violani) and come from the Royal Palace of Caserta; initially placed inside the villa, they were placed here as part of the works to renovate the entrance decided in 1780 by Ferdinand IV of Bourbon based on a design by Carlo Vanvitelli.

As part of the project, the statue of the Faun playing the Piffero, currently kept in storage, will also be restored and reassembled.
