The campaign is divided into several initiatives throughout Italy, culminating in the demonstration-press conference that will be held on Wednesday 18 September at 10 am in front of the Institute. Beccaria of Milan.
“Vogliamo attirare l’attenzione – spiega il segretario generale del S.PP., Aldo By Giacomo – su quanto sta accadendo negli istituti penali per minorenni, dove a marzo 2023 risultavano detenuti 380 ragazzi, tra cui 12 ragazze, pari al 2,7% del totale dei giovani in carico alla giustizia minorile.
After the serious episodes in Rome, Milan (Beccaria) and Turin (Ferrante Aporti), where 11 precautionary measures were issued for the prisoners involved in the August revolt, this very serious emergency can no longer be blamed solely on the prison police, who at Beccaria have already suffered the worst consequences with 13 arrests, as is also happening in the 190 penitentiary institutions in the country".
“It is essential to invest in young prisoners to prevent them from becoming habitual prisoners. The current prison system for minors is not only ineffective, but risks turning into a school of crime, given that 90% of those who enter start a criminal career, with adult prison as the next step.
Seventy percent of the youth enter pretrial detention with an average stay of just over 70 days. In 100, 2023% of the entries into prison occurred for pretrial detention, and over half of the other entries (79,3 out of 140) were for the execution of a sentence from freedom. For us, the necessary solutions are much more complex,” adds Di Giacomo.
"In Milan we will demonstrate so that the essential measures are finally taken to ensure that control of institutions for minors and adults returns to the State. We cannot allow the State to raise the 'white flag' and continue to unload an unmanageable situation onto the prison police.
The demonstration will be attended, together with the prison staff, by delegations of the agents' families, who fear for the safety of their loved ones every day, and representatives of the victims of extortion, robberies and violence suffered by those who have just left prison.
. Furthermore, we will give voice to those who continue to suffer threats from prison via cell phones. Our appeal is clear: there is no more time to waste. We trust that journalists and information workers will give space to these stories of state servants and citizens to whom we will give voice”.
