Camorra boss Barattolo: "He called me Mozzarella instead of Mazzarella. I have to kill him."

An argument that began on Instagram over a personal offense nearly escalated into a conflict between members of the Mazzarella and Papale/Ascione clans of Ercolano.

At the center of the case is an eighteen-year-old unrelated to criminal activity, accused of disrespecting the Mazzarella clan's leader, 32-year-old Luciano Barattolo. The case, intercepted by investigators in November 2023, highlights the distorted honor dynamics that govern the relationships between criminal groups and the local area.

The origin of the conflict

On November 22, 2023, a conversation intercepted at 21:02 PM reveals that Luciano Barattolo, at his mother Giuseppina Mazzarella's house with Emanuele Amoroso and Stefano Capuano, is discussing an argument with a young man from Ercolano.

The boy, contacted via Instagram, allegedly offended Barattolo, ignoring his warnings and even threatening to turn to the police after he revealed his membership in the clan.

“I told him my family name and he made fun of me.”

The reason? Messages sent to a woman romantically linked to Barattolo. "I told him my family name and he mocked me," Barattolo complained, furious at the humiliation he had suffered.

Barattolo, outraged, declares that he had considered killing the boy and begins planning a punitive expedition to Herculaneum. "Tomorrow we'll go in a big group," he tells his interlocutors, announcing that more men will arrive from Naples to "resolve" the matter.

Barattolo calls Tommaso Nocerino, known as "Tommaso dell'acqua," a well-known figure in Ercolano's criminal circles . He acts as a go-between for a clarifying meeting between the two parties. Nocerino tries to calm Barattolo down, emphasizing that the young man doesn't know who he's talking to. "He's a brat; he didn't understand the name you called him," he tries to explain.

Humiliation as redemption

Barattolo demands that the young man apologize publicly, in front of dozens of members. He refuses to allow the boy's father to punish his son in private. Instead, he demands that the humiliation occur "in front of everyone," in a sort of submission ceremony.

"I want to hear the apology with my own ears," he tells his partner. And he adds: "If they try to justify themselves, I'll go back to Naples, but then everyone goes their separate ways."

On November 23, 2023, the meeting took place in Ercolano, near "Gigino dei Panini" (Via Pugliano). Present were Luciano Barattolo , the young man, his father, and Giorgio Di Bartolomeo, a member of the Papale/Ascione clan.

Di Bartolomeo defends the eighteen-year-old, pointing out his young age and inexperience, but Barattolo insists on the insult to his family, which has been in business for "seventy years." After a heated exchange, the boy apologizes, as urged by Di Bartolomeo, closing the matter.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Luciano Barattolo and Di Bartolomeo discussed the relationship between the Mazzarella and Papale/Ascione clans. Recalling his old prison acquaintances with prominent Mazzarella figures, Di Bartolomeo proposed a collaboration in drug trafficking, offering a supply of "weed" for €3.800.

Barattolo suggests creating a "bridge" between the two territories with a contact person and an encrypted telephone, to strengthen ties and business. Both agree on the need for closer cooperation, lamenting a weakening of relations that harms common interests.
