Rome – "Those who wield power don't want to be controlled." Nicola Gratteri, Naples' chief prosecutor, spoke bluntly this evening on La7's Otto e mezzo. According to the magistrate, attacks on the judiciary are repeated "every time the majority's reforms aren't implemented in accordance with their vision."

The “almost useless” reforms

The core of Gratteri's criticism concerns the substance of the legislative measures approved by the majority. "They've made almost useless reforms," ​​he said. "Let's consider the security decrees, which can't achieve results because they don't address provisions of the Code of Criminal Procedure."

The prosecutor then emphasized a crucial point: "Judges apply the laws passed by the majority, which then can't blame the magistrates." This stance echoes recent statements made during the Festa del Fatto Quotidiano and other television appearances, where Gratteri has repeatedly denounced the risk of a progressive "dismantling" of the judicial system.

The referendum and the campaign against the law

Gratteri then recalled the role played by magistrates in the referendum campaign on justice. "The referendum's defeat," he stated, "is due to the fact that we had the strength and energy to go everywhere to explain to Italians the futility of that law."

A message that confirms the Neapolitan prosecutor's hard line against an executive that, he says, continues to seek "scapegoats" in the judiciary instead of addressing the real issues of justice efficiency.

"Immigration and Islamization aren't real emergencies. If they weren't there, Italian factories would grind to a halt because in previous decades, young Italians weren't given the opportunity to marry and have children; perhaps instead of the 110 bonus, public housing and daycare centers should have been built. I don't differentiate between Italians and foreigners, but between those who commit crimes and those who don't," Gratteri explained.

And then he added: "If I create a strong and serious judicial system, without wasting time with legislative decrees, with the courage and freedom to change the penal code, the code of criminal procedure, and the prison system while respecting the Constitution, I don't need to do anything else."
