She had decided to end the relationship, but was afraid to tell them. This is one of the most significant points that emerged during the hearing in the trial for the death of Martina Carbonaro, the 14-year-old killed on May 26, 2025, in an abandoned building in Afragola, near Naples.
Emilia Marino, a trainee teacher at the time and the only witness named for today's hearing, told the judges about the girl's fears. The teacher had established a relationship of trust with Martina that, as she explained in court, extended beyond the mere school context.
"She was a sunny, cheerful, very sweet girl. She sought reassurance," explained the teacher, unable to hold back her tears as she recalled those days.
Among the most painful memories is the day before her disappearance. Martina approached the teacher to say hello and told her she wanted to tell her something.
Marino, however, had to defend his thesis that day and left school early. "She told me she had some things to tell me. I had to defend my thesis, so I left early. I told her we'd talk in the afternoon," he said.
On the morning of May 27th, the teacher learned from colleagues of the girl's disappearance. "I was upset; I had avoided her," she said through tears. At that moment, she also thought that Martina might have gone to Federico, a boy with whom she had established an exclusively virtual relationship through chats.
He tried calling her, but her phone was unreachable. So he sent her a text message to say he could speak to her anytime.
Another episode also emerged in the courtroom, dating back to May 16, 2025, a few days before the death.
Martina had tried to contact the teacher. Unable to reach her, she left a message asking her to call back: "Professor, can you please call me... I really need it... I don't know what I'm feeling right now."
A message that, heard today in court, takes on particular weight in the witness's story.
Marino explained several times that Martina confided in her, but never told her everything. "She let me in, but only up to a certain point," the teacher said, emphasizing how difficult it was to fully understand the girl's distress.
A particularly painful coincidence accompanies the professor's story. The day Martina was found dead, Marino graduated with a thesis dedicated to the 14-year-old.
During the deposition, the memory of that day moved the teacher deeply.
At the end of the hearing, together with Sergio Pisani, the Carbonaro family's lawyer, the professor emphasized the need to strengthen a network in schools capable of promptly recognizing signs of distress in adolescents.
The topic was also taken up by lawyer Pisani, who called for the creation of listening centers capable of connecting children in difficulty with their families and specialized professionals.
The lawyer also emphasized the possibility for minors to independently consult a psychologist, without necessarily having to obtain parental consent, arguing for the need to amend the current rules.
The trial will continue on October 30, when the boy with whom Martina had had a chat relationship is expected to testify.
An interim hearing has been scheduled for November 10 to complete the examination of the Prosecutor's witnesses.
The most anticipated date is November 24th, when Alessio Tucci, accused of the murder of the 14-year-old, will be heard in court. Through his defense attorney, Mario Mangazzo, Tucci has announced his intention to make statements during the hearing.
This step will add another layer to the procedural picture, as the trial continues through the hearing of witnesses and the reconstruction of what happened in the hours preceding Martina's death.
