John Marchionni
Olbia – A holiday in Sardinia turned tragic for Giovanni Marchionni, 21, originally from Bacoli, who was found dead yesterday morning – Friday, August 8 – inside a boat docked at the Marina di Portisco, in the heart of Gallura.
According to initial information, the young man's body showed no obvious signs of violence. Investigators are not ruling out any possibility, ranging from sudden illness to accidental intoxication, to the possibility of fume poisoning, possibly from the onboard batteries or the chemical toilet. The autopsy, already ordered by the judiciary, will shed full light on the matter.
Marchionni was a guest aboard a friend's boat. Thursday evening, while the other occupants went out to dinner ashore, he preferred to stay on board. That decision, perhaps prompted by fatigue, proved fatal.
The next morning, upon returning, his crewmates found him lifeless in the cabin. Initial estimates suggest he had died several hours before he was found.
Officers from the Olbia police station, including the forensic team, responded to the scene, along with firefighters, emergency medical services, and the Port Authority. The Tempio Pausania Public Prosecutor's Office immediately ordered the vessel's seizure and opened an investigation.
The news has deeply shocked the community of Bacoli, where the young man was well-known. Messages of affection and remembrance have multiplied on social media. Among the first to express grief over the loss was Mayor Josi Gerardo Della Ragione :
I learned with deep sorrow of the tragic passing of Giovanni, 21, a son of Bacoli. He was in Sardinia for work and lost his life last night. This news saddens the entire Bacoli community. It is a most atrocious loss. I had the opportunity to express the citizens' deepest condolences to his family. We are all close to you. Rest in peace, young angel.
Meanwhile, friends and acquaintances anxiously await the outcome of the investigation to understand what really happened on that boat, on a summer night that should have been carefree but was instead tinged with mystery.
