Posillipo, new beach tender begins: 50% will be free

Naples – The Posillipo beaches are undergoing a transformation. Following the recent ruling by the Campania Regional Administrative Court (TAR), which annulled the automatic extension of beach concessions established by the Municipality, a turning point has arrived: the new public tender for the assignment of three lots of beach along the city's coastline has been published in the Official Journal of the European Union.

The Central Tyrrhenian Sea Port Authority announced the move, specifying that the procedure concerns two sections of approximately 1.000 square meters on the Posillipo beach and one of approximately 500 square meters near the Monache beach.

Pending the new assignment, existing businesses will be able to continue operating temporarily, but with the certainty that 50% of the space will be designated as a public beach.

The Authority's decision comes at a delicate time, when the issue is intertwined with economic interests, legal battles, and growing demands for universal access to the sea. In the background, the dispute between Palazzo Petrucci —the renowned Michelin-starred restaurant in Posillipo—and the operators of Bagno Elena, a historic beach resort at the center of disputes over the use and accessibility of this stretch of coast, remains ongoing.

The new tender, designed to ensure greater transparency and accessibility, requires participating businesses to also offer services to nearby public beaches, such as lifeguards, cleaning, and maintenance, even during the winter months.

Regarding the maritime state-owned areas not included in the tender, the Authority has initiated discussions with the other competent administrations to assess the possibility of making them accessible to the public.

The game is far from over: between appeals, private interests, and collective needs, the Posillipo coast remains one of the hottest spots in the Neapolitan summer.
