Severe weather in the Salerno area, landslides and flooding: the Amalfi Coast closed, families evacuated.

SALERNO – Landslides, mudslides, and flooding have been affecting the Salerno area in recent hours, where severe weather has left a trail of damage and disruption to traffic. The most critical situation is along the coast and in the hilly areas, with work underway and traffic slowed in several strategic locations.

In Camerota, Cilento, the force of the sea has hurled rocks, sand, and debris onto the Mingardo regional road 562. Safety operations are still underway, and municipal police are patrolling the area. The road remains passable, but the municipality urges extreme caution. In the same area, a landslide caused by heavy rains affected the road between Camerota and Lentiscosa: prompt intervention allowed traffic to be restored within a few hours.

Vietri sul Mare is also experiencing serious problems , where a rockfall of approximately 50 cubic meters forced the closure of the Amalfi Coast Highway 163 at kilometer 48,800. The collapse damaged safety fences and flooded Via Madonna dell'Arco, near several homes, with debris. Six families were evacuated as a precaution. Firefighters are monitoring the cliffside, including with the aid of drones, while the Rescue Coordination Center is meeting at the Prefecture in Salerno to assess the situation.

There was also disruption in the capital, where a landslide on Via Fra' Generoso, a road connecting the commercial port to the motorway junctions, forced the introduction of a one-way system regulated by traffic lights, with inevitable repercussions on traffic.

The severe weather also had consequences in the Naples area. In Arzano, fourteen families, a total of thirty-four people, were evacuated after the partial collapse of a building on Via Zanardelli, which had been evacuated for some time. According to information from the Naples Prefecture , the building had a safety and demolition order pending, but it was not carried out.

While the sea remains rough along much of the Salerno coast and continues to wash debris onto coastal roads, authorities are focusing on preventing further landslides. Damage assessments are still ongoing, but the picture confirms the fragility of a region that, under the pressure of heavy rains and storm surges, is revealing all its structural weaknesses.
