Bulldozers in action
Naples – Bulldozers went into action at first light in the San Francesco district. Their target was a symbol, even more than a property: the illegal villa of the Botta family, closely linked to the powerful Secondigliano Alliance criminal cartel. With today's demolition, the last remaining vestige of illegal construction in the area has been definitively removed, restoring the space to legal urban planning.
The interior of the approximately 550-square-meter residence told a tale of clan-typical ostentation. Luxurious furnishings, fine marble, and a detail that struck investigators: a "diploma" hanging on the wall celebrating the owner as "the best boss in the world." A self-celebration that today clashes with the concrete, crumbling under the blows of Acer (Campania Residential Construction Agency) machinery.
The villa was linked to the family recently at the center of investigations into criminal influence in the management of the San Giovanni Bosco hospital. "It was the symbol of a context marked by deep-rooted illegal dynamics," Agency officials explained.
The operation was not an isolated act, but the culmination of a complex process that brought together the Prefecture, the Prosecutor's Office, the Police Headquarters, the Municipality, and the Region. The city's highest officials, from Prefect Michele di Bari to Prosecutor Antonio Ricci, were present at the demolition, a testament to the political significance of the project.
"This is a great moment for the city," declared the Prefect of Bari. "There were numerous meetings behind this result; it is a substantial act that returns a piece of Naples to its rightful owners: the citizens." David Lebro, president of Acer Campania, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing how institutional collaboration has reaffirmed the principle of legality in a challenging area.
The demolition of the boss's villa is just the latest step in a more profound urban transformation. The overall project involved 12 buildings for a total of 288 apartments. The redevelopment plan followed different paths depending on technical needs: three buildings were demolished, three others were rebuilt due to structural issues, while the remaining six were renovated.
Soon, the new layout of the neighborhood will be completed with the construction of two new buildings, intended to provide a concrete response to the housing emergency and to definitively erase the shadow of the Secondigliano Alliance from the San Francesco district.
