Naples – The breathtaking view of Marechiaro, the scent of the gulf just steps from the famous "fenestrella," and glasses raised to celebrate a baptism. An idyllic atmosphere that, for a 27-year-old Neapolitan, transformed, in a matter of moments, into the setting for his capture.
The young man, a fugitive since November 2024, was tracked down and arrested by the Carabinieri of the Castello di Cisterna operations unit while he was sitting at a restaurant table, intent on scanning the menu.
The 27-year-old had a final prison sentence pending: he must serve 10 years in prison for the attempted murder of Giuseppe Orefice, a prominent member of the Orefice clan active in the Neapolitan hinterland. For nearly two years, the man had managed to evade justice, disappearing from the radar.
The Carabinieri, however, never stopped monitoring his social network and his closest contacts. When news emerged of his possible participation in the baptism of a close friend's son, investigators realized it was the perfect opportunity to close the circle.
The Carabinieri showed up at the Posillipo venue, blending in with the customers and staff. They patiently waited for the right moment, studying the wanted man's movements to avoid causing panic among customers uninvolved in the incident. As soon as the 27-year-old isolated himself from the rest of the guests, the officers swung into action.
Seeing himself hunted, the young man immediately realized he had no way out. For a moment, he toyed with the idea of a dramatic turn of events: jumping from the balcony directly into the gulf and attempting to swim away. A desperate plan that was dashed before it could even be conceived: surrounded and with no room to maneuver, he allowed himself to be handcuffed without putting up any further resistance.
While the fugitive surrendered to the evidence, the same cannot be said for the relatives and friends present at the banquet. Upon seeing the handcuffs, the reaction in the room was violent: the officers were bombarded with insults, threats, and shoves in an attempt, fortunately in vain, to prevent the arrest.
Once calm was restored, the 27-year-old was taken from the restaurant and rushed to the Secondigliano prison, where he will serve his sentence. For him, the "sea outside" will remain only a television memory.
