Luigi Barbareschi, the fugitive arrested
Naples – From the baptismal banquet to the prison cell in a matter of minutes. This is how Luigi Barbareschi, 27, ended his time on the run. He was arrested by Carabinieri officers from the Castello di Cisterna branch of the Carabinieri during an operation that took place Sunday afternoon inside a popular restaurant in Marechiaro, where a family party was taking place.
The young man had reached the facility to attend the baptism of a friend's son, unaware however that he had long been in the sights of investigators who were following his movements and contacts.
Barbareschi was sentenced to ten years in prison for the attempted murder of Giuseppe Orefice, which occurred on May 16, 2021, in Castello di Cisterna.
According to investigators' reconstruction, the 27-year-old, along with an accomplice, fired nine shots from a 7,65 caliber pistol at the victim, seriously wounding her. Marco D'Ambrosio, the victim's son and known in criminal circles as "'o Cacaglio," has also been convicted of the same crime and is believed to be involved in the attack.
The arrest is the result of a lengthy investigative effort conducted by the Operations Section of the Castello di Cisterna Company.
The military had been monitoring people believed to be close to the wanted man for some time and, through a series of investigations and observation services, they managed to identify the place and time when he allegedly appeared.
To avoid any risk to the guests and ensure the safety of the operation, the Carabinieri set up discreet security inside the venue. Some officers in civilian clothes mingled with the guests, sitting at tables and awaiting the wanted man's arrival.
Once inside the restaurant, Barbareschi was kept under constant observation. The moment chosen to intervene came when the 27-year-old stepped away from the other guests to make a phone call.
At that point, the raid began. A swift and silent intervention that surprised both the addressee and many of those present.
Investigators wanted to avoid any sudden reaction that could create dangerous situations inside the building, which was particularly crowded for the ceremony.
According to what has emerged, after being reached by the military, the 27-year-old briefly considered trying to escape, even considering throwing himself into the sea.
Realizing he had no way out, he gave up all resistance and turned himself in to the Carabinieri. Among the details emerging from the operation was the presence of a smartly dressed female marshal, perfectly integrated among the guests, ready to intervene alongside her colleagues.
Once the formal procedures were completed, Barbareschi was escorted to the offices of the Castello di Cisterna Company and subsequently transferred to Secondigliano prison, where he will serve his final sentence.
Investigators consider the operation a significant achievement in their efforts to combat organized crime and capture individuals subject to final judicial orders.
