Rivers at risk and millions still unused: "Castellammare can't wait any longer."

Castellammare di Stabia is once again grappling with the fragility of its landscape. Mud, landslides, debris, and flooding have affected various areas of the city in recent hours, from the Old Town to the port areas, all the way to Via Acton and the main road. This situation brings the issue of waterway maintenance and the prevention of hydrogeological instability back to the forefront.

The Democrats and Progressives of Castellammare di Stabia are addressing the issue, reiterating the criticisms they've expressed in recent days in a new document and calling for a change in the management of resources earmarked for local security.

The 509 thousand euros for the safety of the streams

One of the points raised by the political group concerns the regional funding provided by Decree No. 80 of October 29, 2024. According to the press release, that provision designated the Municipality of Castellammare di Stabia as the implementing body for safety measures along five streams: Sciuscelle al Cognulo, Piazza Grande, Foiano, Faro, and San Pietro, with a total allocation of €509.

Democrats and Progressives emphasize that these are precisely some of the waterways affected by the latest episodes of bad weather, which have carried mud, woody material, waste, and other debris downstream.

Hence the question posed in the document: why, given the available resources, wouldn't maintenance and cleaning work have been carried out sooner?

«Almost two years without any decisive interventions»

According to the reconstruction contained in the press release, almost two years after the allocation was made, no decisive interventions have yet been carried out on the affected streams.

The Democrats and Progressives also point out that an advance on the financing would have been requested in February 2026, resulting in 40 euros.

This issue, according to the political group, represents only one piece of a broader situation characterized by resources already identified but not yet transformed into concrete projects.

2012 funding also in the crosshairs

The document also addresses funding dating back several years. At the heart of the dispute are the €10 million allocated in 2012, which, according to the Democrats and Progressives, have not yet been fully translated into the expected interventions.

To these sums, the group adds other resources indicated as idle or unused, including 15 million euros allocated to Savorito and 35 million allocated to the Port and Fincantieri.

These numbers, according to the initiative's promoters, highlight an issue that goes beyond the mere weather emergency: the city's ability to transform available funding into projects that are actually completed.

The crux of the PRIUS program

The press release also raises the issue of the PRIUS Program, for which Democrats and Progressives speak of potential resources ranging from 23 to 26 million euros, including potential bonuses.

Here too, the request is for clarity regarding the timeframes, procedures, and concrete possibilities for using the available resources.

The group fears that further delays could result in the city losing opportunities, especially in terms of land security, infrastructure, and development.

"An agreement is needed for Castellammare."

Faced with this scenario, the Democrats and Progressives are calling on the President of the Campania Region to directly take the initiative to build an "Agreement for Castellammare," involving institutions, social, economic, and political forces.

The stated objective is to coordinate available resources, unblock stalled projects, and identify an operational path capable of accelerating the completion of the works.

This request comes as the city once again begins to question the vulnerability of some areas during more intense weather events.

"We can't wait until 2028"

The final political message is clear: according to Democrats and Progressives, territorial security cannot be tied to the timing of the next electoral contest.

"We can't wait for the 2028 vote," they argue, calling for the issue to be addressed immediately and separated from the dynamics of future election campaigns.

The priority indicated is citizen safety, land maintenance, and the ability to transform available funding into concrete interventions.

For Castellammare, therefore, the issue raised by the group concerns not only emergency management following the recent severe weather events, but also the planning of interventions and the use of already identified resources. This is a challenge in which administrative time, prevention, and spending capacity become crucial elements in reducing the region's vulnerability.
